Q: I am a graduating high school senior. Can I still apply to the program?
A: Yes! You are eligible to apply as long as you will have your high school diploma conferred by the beginning of the summer program (June).
Q: Is there a minimum GPA to apply to this program?
A: No, we will consider all applicants to the program regardless of GPA. However, due to the competitive nature of the applicant pool, most admitted scholars will have a STEM GPA and cumulative GPA over 3.0.
Q: Do I get to choose the mentor I am matched with?
A: No, however Mentor/Mentee matches are arranged based on 3 primary factors: 1. Your area of interest; 2. Mentor availability; 3. Preferred research approach (basic, clinical, computational, translational, etc.).
Q: Is there any flexibility with application material deadlines?
A: No, so please be sure to begin working on your application materials and notifying your recommenders as early as possible!
Q: I have another commitment during the summer that will conflict with the program dates, can I still apply/participate?
A: We expect our selected scholars to commit to spending the full 10-weeks of the program on-site in Baltimore, MD. If this is not possible, you may not be selected, or may result in your dismissal from the program.
Q: What is it like living in Baltimore City?
A: Please see our ‘Resources’ page for information about living and working in Baltimore City.
Q: I have no previous lab or research experience. Will I be able to keep up with the pace of my project(s) in my mentor’s lab?
A: Our faculty mentors are all experienced in training undergraduate students coming from a variety of skill levels. Once selected and matched with your mentor, you will be oriented to lab techniques, procedures, and skills necessary to make your program experience a successful one.
Q: I see that housing is provided for accepted Scholars. If I live locally (DC Metropolitan Area, Baltimore City/County) can I stay at home instead and commute?
A: We have allowed this in the past on a case-by-case basis, however we do encourage all of our Scholars to take advantage of the shared dormitories and live together in provided housing, as an opportunity to build community within the combined cohorts of Scholars. This will also cut down on transportation costs (like gas, parking) which are not covered by the Program.
